What is an Extension Tube?

What is an Extension Tube?

An extension tube is a simply a metal or plastic tube which connects in between the camera and the lens. It is not an optical element, so there is no glass involved. It actually extend the lens. It has a very simply scientific theory. There in no any other rocket sciences or any modern technologies used in extension tubes.

Why those extension tubes are useful?

Most of the people are having 18-55mm lenses. So I will take it as an example. Imagine it has a minimum focal distance of 0.45 meters. You like to move further more and take a picture, But it is not possible because, since the minimum focal length is 0.45 meters, you cannot move further more. In this case we have to use a macro lens or an extension tube to take the picture. Macro lenses are very expensive. So they are hard to buy. In this case we can use extension tubes to take a macro photograph. When compare the prices of macro lenses and extension tubes, extension tubes are absolutely cheaper than a macro lens.

What are the effects of these Extension Tubes to the image?

Up to my knowledge extension tubes does not affect the quality of the image since it doesn't involve in any technical process of the camera. But a small distortion can be happen.

Using Extension Tubes:

There is no any complex methods to do. But remember when you hold the lens, hold it down from your lens because the camera body is having an extra weight and sometimes it will try to crack.

Macro Lens or an Extension Tube?

A macro lens is having 1:1 magnification and it gives you a better photograph in more detail than adding an extension tube to a non macro lens. If you can't yet afford a macro lens then extension tubes will give you some sort of satisfaction. The most effective way to use extension tube is use it with a macro lens. The result will be amazing. Finally what I have to say is Macro lenses are far better than Extension tubes, but considering the prices and the results, by using extension tubes we can get almost the same result for a cheaper price. So my opinion is, "Go for it!".
