What is a Prime Lens?
You may have heard of Prime Lenses. Unlike other lenses, you cannot zoom those lenses because they are having a fixed focal length. Those lenses are also called "Fixed Focal Length Lenses". The most standard prime lens is 50mm lens. Its pretty common among photographers.
Advantages of a Prime Lens:
For the beginners, optical performance of the Prime Lens is better than Zoom lenses. Prime Lenses are having wider maximum aperture settings than other lenses. So these Prime Lenses are absolutely perfect to take photographs is low light destinations such as parties, night clubs, concerts, bars and etc. Since the aperture of a Prime Lens can open up to so far you don't need to use a flash gun also. You can go up to f/1.8 aperture in a normal 50mm prime lens. And also when we shoot from a Prime Lens it only grabs a limited area of depth of field. This option is perfect for portrait photography.
When we consider about the structure of the lens, its handy and very light weighted lens. Prime Lenses are smaller and lighter than usual zoom lenses.
Quality of the pictures:
Prime Lenses are giving the best quality pictures than the zoom lenses, because there will be a little distortion on the pictures you have taken form a zoom lens. If you want to take a picture in high quality without any colour fringing or image distortion, my suggestion for you to use a Prime Lens. Prime Lenses are the best ones for the beginners, to learn photography with creativity. Instead of zooming and shooting, they can learn the new effects, new trends of the field. So I strongly recommend, if you can afford a 50mm f/1.8 lens, then go for it. It will be a good start and an investment for your photography career.
Disadvantages of Prime Lenses:
Since the Prime Lenses are having a fixed focal length, you have to move by using your feet to take a picture. Except this issue, there is no any black marks regarding this lens up to my knowledge.
